The BLS Employment Situation report comes out monthly, usually on a Friday at 8:30 a.m. New York time.
- Nonfarm payrolls come from the establishment survey (about 119,000 businesses and agencies, ~622,000 worksites); the unemployment rate from the household survey (~60,000 households); the report also includes average hourly earnings.
- It matters because of the Fed's maximum-employment mandate and its link to rate expectations.
- It's an estimate: a monthly change of about ±122,000 is the threshold for statistical significance, and it is revised twice in the next two months plus an annual benchmark.
- Don't chase the first second; a stop isn't a guaranteed price.
Quick check
Three questions. Pick an answer to see why.
1.Which survey produces the nonfarm payrolls (NFP) number?
2.About how large must a monthly payroll change be to be statistically significant (BLS)?
3.Payrolls beat forecasts, but last month was revised down and unemployment rose. What's the sensible reading?
