Wallets: hot vs cold, and protecting your seed phrase

A crypto wallet does not hold coins; it holds the keys that let you move them. Whoever has the keys controls the money.

  • The private key cannot be changed or replaced; lose it and you lose access permanently.
  • The seed phrase is a word backup of your wallet: store it securely and never share it, never as a photo or in the cloud.
  • Hot wallets are online and convenient but exposed to cyber threats; cold wallets are offline and generally safer but can be lost or damaged.
  • Leaving coins on a platform means trusting it: if it is hacked or goes bankrupt you may lose access.
