Build the foundation before you invest.

  • MyMoney.gov: before buying investments, build emergency savings covering at least three months of needs, kept in an accessible insured account.
  • Liquidity is how easily or quickly an asset can be sold for cash; large listed shares are liquid, direct property much less so.
  • Match each goal to its time horizon: money needed soon should not sit in volatile assets.
  • Cash is safest but carries inflation risk.
  • Tax rules differ widely by country — check your official tax authority; this is not tax advice. Keep records of every trade.
